Human nature tends to cause people to focus on what they might be giving up, and that is particularly easy to do if the organization has not communicated the reasons for the change in a way that allows staff to see how they will derive a personal benefit from the change. The strategy can be the best one ever on paper — but must be accepted by a company’s employees before it can work.

Open and honest communication is a company’s best plan when attempting to effect organizational change. Staff needs to have pertinent information and the ability to provide feedback on the proposed change. All the speeches, newsletters, corporate videos, values statements and such in the world cannot engage the employees of a company the way that allowing them a part to play in the process can.

Be consistent. Dogs get confused if you’re not consistent. Now that you are getting familiar with teaching a command through conditioned reflex, you can use similar techniques to stop or break any behavior whatsoever.

A set of cans on a string is great tool in helping to change the behavior. What we do is allow the bad behavior, make a sound with the string to stop it, and then praise him. This conditioning is the key to success.

Every time we create a sound this way, we praise him until he stops the behavior. You have to be ready to start the sound again when the behavior starts. You have to get past the point where you say to yourself “why should i praise him ?” but it works. As we said before you have to stop thinking like a human.

The value of this training method is that you can use it now and forever, for anything that you want him to do. It is so effective, that should he not perform as you expect, then he is most likely rebelling against your authority.

You will soon come to enjoy this process because it really works well and you can take satisfaction from knowing how to change behavior. Do bear in mind that this is changing existing behavior, not teaching new behavior.
