    Computer monitors have a rich history, using technologies first invented in the late 1800s. CRTs (cathode ray tubes) were first used in the 1940s in television sets and, with advances and modifications, developed in to the CRT computer monitors in use today. Development of newer types of video displays has led to a general changeover in preference from CRT monitors toward the LCD (liquid crystal display).

    Cathode ray tube (CRT) computer monitors work by using an electron gun, or cathode, that fires electrons (cathode rays) through a vacuum tube within the monitor. By using magnetic fields, these rays are eventually translated in to the appropriate colors on the display. Until recently, CRT computer monitors were the standard in home and business computer systems. However, because of the way CRT monitors work, they are extremely bulky and heavy. They consume much more power than cutting edge technologies like LCD. As a result, CRT computer monitors are no longer as popular as they once were.

    Liquid crystal display (LCD) flat panel computer monitors display colors by filtering light through the liquid crystals, thereby producing the various colors on the screen. Because of advances in video technologies, LCD computer monitors now offer lower response times that ensure that there is little or no ghosting when playing games or watching video. More affordable prices, non-glare screens, higher contrast ratios, accurate color rendering, a smaller footprint, lower energy consumption and a longer life span have all contributed to make LCD computer monitors the preferred choice of the majority computer users.

    Computer monitors use screen resolution settings to display the objects on the screen. Most LCD computer monitors use a native resolution, which is the maximum number of pixels that can be displayed on the screen. Typically, the optimum resolution for a 15in flat screen LCD monitor is 1024×768 while the same resolution is optimum for a 17in CRT. An LCD monitor should always use the native resolution setting. Using a different setting will result in a distorted, washed out video display. CRT monitors do not require a native setting and the resolution may be adjusted without compromising video display quality.

    Traditional CRT monitors with curved screens cause curvature of objects displayed at the screen’s edge. With the introduction of flat panel display computer monitors, edge distortion has become a thing of the past. While LCD computer monitors have always been flat, flat panel CRTs were also manufactured.

    In addition to technological advances in video displays, today’s computer monitors offer ease of use and accessibility as never before. Modern monitors may include features such as USB ports, video connections, web cameras, speakers and adjustable stands.
