G8 Plan to Bolster Health in Poor Countries Flawed In an opinion piece published in the Accra Mail and republished at All-Africa.com, Research Fellow Andrew Farlow of Oxford University says the G8's focus on health in poor countries highlighted at the St. Petersburg G8 meeting is not going to help very many sick people in Africa. Instead, it is designed to help pharmaceutical companies, rich investors, and the politicians who promote such schemes in the interest of getting re-elected. Most of the emphasis is on the development of new vaccines -- for instance the Russian plan to create an international centre for developing an HIV vaccine, and the multi-billion dollar plan to create an end-game malaria vaccine. But according to Farlow, much more immediate good could be done by using medicines that we already have and already know work. The biggest problem with these is getting them to the people who need them. As he says, " Two-thirds of all African children who die under the age of five could be saved by low-cost treatments such as vitamin A supplements, oral re-hydration salts and existing combination-therapy drugs against malaria." Better water management and the use of inexpensive insecticides inside dwellings have also been proven to reduce malaria significantly. Given the state of the economy in most African countries, coupled with extreme poverty, poor roads, the lack of clinics, and corrupt, inefficient governments, there is very little hope that a new wonder drug would make much difference anyway. Except as an effective way to line the pockets of pharmaceutical companies, medical researchers and everyone else standing in line for a part of the windfall. As Farlow says, "If existing drugs, technologies and methods were properly distributed, the benefits for the world's poorest people would be immense." But the G8 leaders have other objectives in mind. |
