According to research done by internet researcher Datamonitor the number of consumers shopping online is expected to nearly double by the end of the decade.

Datamonitor has predicted the number of people shopping on the web will increase from current 10 million to about 25 million by 2010, and retail spending will increased by a similar proportion to about $30 billion.

Their research also suggests that when you add services into the mix, the amount spent online will be closer to $55 billion.

According to their research, online food and grocery purchases will explode and will account for about 1/3 of total online spending. Clothing and footwear will also be big.

The study was commissioned by PayPal.
